Massive Calorie Intake in Hungary: Café Gerbeaud, Budapest
All right, so it was coffee again (and
iced, at that) rather than tea, but I think this one still counts. Café
Gerbeaud is the oldest coffee house in Budapest, having opened in 1858. Walking
inside, one feels (as is undoubtedly the intention) transported back in time.
Rococo ceilings, lavishly draped curtains, chandeliers, wood, brass, marble and mirrors surround you. I bet the café on the Titanic looked like this. I had
the Dobos cake (sponge with chocolate buttercream and hard caramel topping) and
the iced coffee with ice cream and whipped cream. Jolly good job I was doing a
lot of walking, really. It was very nice, but incredibly expensive. I think I
worked out it was something like £18.00 with service charge included. Clearly
you pay for the name and the history. I took quite a few photographs to get my
money’s worth, and pretended I was someone rather fashionable and a bit bohemian,
circa 1910.
