Keep fit, Iranian style: Zurkaneh session in Yazd, Iran
Zurkaneh means ‘house of strength’ and is the name given to the gymnasium where Varzesh-e Pahlavani (‘heroic strength’) rituals are practised. This is a traditional form of exercise for men, originating as a means of training Persian warriors. Recognised in 2010 by UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Zurkaneh rituals blend martial arts, wrestling, and music, and are closely linked with the history and culture of Iran. They are designed to engender discipline and foster mental and spiritual wellbeing alongside improving physical fitness.
I was very fortunate, when visiting Yazd in Iran a few years ago, to see and film a Zurkaneh session. Normally, women don't watch, but we were made an exception, as we were tourists. They do these exercises for about an hour! The drum broke halfway through the session we saw, creating a bit of additional drama. I’m not much of a sports fan, but this was fascinating to watch.
