More Afternoon Tea Treats: Café Demel, Vienna (yes, I know it’s coffee, not tea)

Oh, Vienna! Where else can you have coffee and cake and convincingly pretend that it’s an intellectual pastime? Well, possibly lots of places, but Vienna is the city of Sigmund Freud, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, etc. And of the Café Demel, which has been around since 1786. I’m pretty certain that means that some of the aforementioned famous arty types must have popped in once or twice for a slice of Sachertorte and a dollop of inspiration. It’s one of those gorgeous coffee houses that look like they’ve come straight out of the Edwardian era, with chandeliers, Neo-Baroque décor, and beautiful wooden and marble counters. It was fascinating to watch top-class bakers and confectioners constructing exquisite cakes. And they have some splendid sweets (I resisted). Did have some cake, though.
