Creepy Crawlies: The First Leg (of many)
Bugs are everywhere, and part of the, ahem, fun of going abroad is sharing your space, albeit temporarily, with the local beasties. This will be the first of several posts detailing my little travel encounters with various (mostly) invertebrates.
I’m not very
good at roughing it, but did once go glamping in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. Backing
onto my air-conditioned tent was a concrete bathroom partially open to the
elements. Bits of it leaked, attracting little snails which bizarrely seemed
to enjoy expeditions around the loo rolls stacked on the vanity unit.
Eventually, I gave up trying to relocate them and simply moved my toothbrush.
Later, a terrified frog vaulted from behind the cistern, nearly giving me a
coronary, but that was nothing compared with the foot-long lizard that scurried
away from its place on the wall as I entered. Never have I been so frightened
of going to the toilet. The piece-de-resistance came when I extracted
some loo roll from its holder, whilst enthroned, and saw a slug clinging to the
paper. I later pondered that, had I failed to see the visitor, he would have
fared marginally worse than I, given where I was planning to put the paper.
(I was unable to take a clear picture of these beasties, though I did snap a quick one of the naughty frog with his friend, Sam Snail, before he hopped it. Bit blurred, but never mind. Other pics included here are of an unidentified insect spotted on the outside of my tent, and of my otherwise very pleasant accommodation at the Hintok River Camp; website link below. Don't be put off; it was a brilliant place to stay, with a rather fabulous outdoor pool which you can see on their website).
