A Voyage to Dark Places: 'The North Water' by Ian McGuire – Book Recommendation
Patrick Sumner faces several enemies at once: the monstrous Henry Drax, unforgiving Arctic conditions, and his own past. McGuire’s tale of an 1859 whaling expedition is charged with violence and skulduggery in a harsh environment where no one is what they seem. As events reveal the depths of humankind’s base nature, can Sumner’s humanity survive intact? McGuire combines despair with intensity and immediacy. I was gripped throughout. Ironically, I read this in bright sunshine. What have you read that describes an environment the polar opposite (sorry, couldn’t resist that!) of where you are?
